Good things

I know I've been posting a lot of "art school" posts, understandably since that is what I am doing 80% (estimate) of my time. Soon it will be summer, my first semester will be over, and I will barrage the website with a plethora of pointless comics about how bored I am. in the meantime: 

I got into my first ever art show. It was the Design 123 show at Cornish for Design students. It may have been old hat for a lot of students there, but for me it was the biggest deal. My pieces were the only comics in the show, and it was the best thing to see them hanging there. 

Good things people.

Day of the Dead

Ughhh, I am not a fan of Blogger and it's inefficient ways of posting artwork. Suuupper annoying. But you can see it, and that's all that matters. For those of you that didn't know, if you click on the pictures you can toggle through them, which is much more fun then scrolling up and down. 

So! This is a project I've been working on in my drawing class. It focuses a lot on ellipses aka circles aka natures perfect form of torture for artists. We had to include three that were on the table and then create our own scenario from our IMAGINATION.

I know! So exciting. 

I like it very much; very challenging, very satifying. I like to look at it, which I guess is a mark of success. Plates are hard. Wine glasses are bitches. Day of the Dead makeup is really neat. Skin tone is challenging.

All the lessons I've learned! 

Franzi

Did a portrait of my buddy Franzi the other day after class. She's a nice lady and very pretty too. I took a picture of her after we went running one day

 (Which I'm sure is exactly the picture she wanted me to use for a portrait).

It's interesting to draw things that I would normally avoid (ie: portraits) and see how much I've improved. I know this is another obvious one, but my classes have improved my skills so much, even in classical drawing that I hardly do outside my drawing class. I draw cartoons man! I'll have to find some things from my notebooks from years ago to post.

 It's fun to see how much I SUCKED have evolved in my art.

Face Sketch

Drawing Trenten while he reads Game of Thrones. I think if you mashed all of them together they might make a good portrait of him, but when I try and draw everything at once...

It doesn't look great. Ex: That one in the top left + bottom right. 

Class! And Schooling! And Learning!

School Is:

A little overwhelming
Expensive
Fun
Invigorating

I am loving my drawing class. Was a little freaked out they placed me in a higher class, but I feel like I'm not only keeping up, I might be in the top of the class. I hesitate to say this of course, cause it sounds braggy as HELL. Bear with me though okay? I'm sure I will have a crisis of self confidence by the time we're through.
We did an exercise where we drew a
banana
apple
and a shoe box
from memory. Then afterword, the teacher brought out the actual, physical items, and we had to draw those. Drawing from my memory was a lot easier, lemme tell you.

For today's assignment, we were to bring in a
pastry
beverage
and a fruit

I brought a muffin from work, pellegrino and a super old nasty lime.
So we made a little composition on the stool (shown above) and drew that. THEN in a surprise assignment (which seems pretty obvious to me now) the teacher had us take away the items and REDO the composition from memory.
Making me regret that I paid such attention to detail on the stool's paint marks.
It was hard man! But I did it. And I loved it.

The Many (Beautiful) Faces of A Narcissist

Realistically it's just because I don't have someone who's willing to sit and make faces at me while I draw them.

Sleep

I'm the only model I have okay? The mirror is much more convenient then soliciting my friends for modeling.

Mostly this is a practice for me in cross hatching and shading with pen. It's something I'd love to be better with, as well as architecture and buildings in pen. BECAUSE. Because you guys; I found the best books at the used book store. 

They are real neat. 

They are by Victor Stienbrueck, who was a Seattle architect who was instrumental in the design of the Space Needle, as well as the movement to keep our beautiful market and (not so beautiful) Pioneer Square intact! He published multiple books of ink drawings of Seattle architecture that are AMAZING.

Apparently the little park at the end of the market is named for him! I had no idea! Learning is great!

Very cool book with beautiful sketches of the Market, as it was in the 1950's.

Ugh, they are both so COOL! I love them. Best find ever. 

Don't be jelly, you can come look at them in my new apartment (Whenever I find it).

Sunny Day Figure Drawing

Today my beautiful friend Talisha did some posing for my friend Priscilla and me, in the gorgeous fantastical sunshine that Seattle has bestowed upon us. It was super fun, and when I get a minute I'll post more, but right now I HAVE TO GO BACK OUTSIDE.

Okay, here's the rest of those babies! Speaking of babies, the cutest freaking darling baby girl was flirting with us while we drew. She came over with her mom and played with my box of pens and even put her precious tootsie roll fingers on my shoulder. Yeah... My ovaries are getting a little out of hand.
